A move by Microsoft to expand cloud computing resources into the European grid may be one of the largest programs anticipated to strengthen the European research community. The announcement of the expansion came during Dan Reed’s keynote address at the Open Grid Forum. According to the announcement, researchers will be able to access resources in the cloud and get technical support when needed.

Cloud computing is a process in which companies convert the software from a computer to a server. This allows anyone with access to the cloud to be able to use the applications, tools, and software programs rather than having to install each one on multiple computers. Using cloud computing will allow researchers across the globe the opportunity to pool resources, including research notes, files, and other data, should they choose to do so.

This online collaboration will allow researchers to share information faster and reduce the expense of doing so. With cloud computing, it will be possible for researchers in France to collaborate with researchers in Scotland in order to complete a project.

To expand its cloud computing services into the European Grid, Microsoft will be working with three partners: the National Institute for Research in Computer Science and Control in France, the University of Nottingham Horizon Institute in the U.K., and the Virutal Multidisciplinary EnviroNments Using Cloud Infrastructures in Europe (VENUS-C).

Microsoft helped co-fund VENUS-C consortium under the 7th Framework Programme with the European Commission as a way to expand cloud computing into the European grid. Researchers can begin applying for funding to export research once the consortium makes an open call for applications.

If the cloud computing system works well for researchers using the European grid, the consortium will look for other ways to deploy the system. Microsoft will currently contribute Windows Azure data and help oversee the deployment of the cloud.

A multi-million dollar initiative for the Upper North Island may help New Zealand-based Transpower defer investment for new assets. Under the North Island Reactive Support program, the initiative would help improve the region’s reliability.

Transpower recently reported on the plan and said it would need to use an interruptible load of electricity to reduce power usage under certain conditions. The company sited hot summer days as one potential condition. Under the new plan, Transpower would compensate businesses willing to allow Transpower the ability to reduce power automatically for non-essential usage according to the conditions of the agreement.

At the beginning of the program, Transpower would reduce the usage for large commercial businesses by turning off the power during non-operating hours. The company does not plan to target residential or smaller businesses at this point in time. By reducing the electrical usage, Transpower hopes to free up funds to invest in new assets, such as smart technologies.

The South Island tested a similar program recently, which showed favorable results. The process Transpower plans to use for the North Island project will follow a similar process as Turkey’s when it connected to the European grid in September 2010.

Turkey was able to tap into the electrical supply through smart technologies. By connecting to the European grid, Turkey can offer its country increased energy and improved economic conditions. As an added benefit to the connection, Turkey can now sell power in the European market through the Turkish Electricity Transmission Company.

Transpower’s plan will also include the installation of two STATCOMs, static var compensators. The company plans to place one in Northland and on Auckland by 2014. The STATCOMs will absorb any excess energy if the voltage exceeds a safe amount.

By following Turkey’s lead, and that of other nations using smart technologies, Transpower may be able to help boost the economy while improving energy reliability for the North Island.

Most students will usually jump at any chance to get a free day from work. The usual culprits for this are snow days, inclement weather, or teacher’s in-service days, but students at Houston ISD can now add hacker days. A recent hacking attempt knocked out the school district’s computer system, cutting students and staff off from the Internet.
While the attack didn’t stop school from being in session, it did halt online classes and cause minor inconveniences. Some students had to delay their projects because they couldn’t access the Internet for multi-media elements. Teachers had to take attendance using paper and pen, and they could not enter or update student grades until the network came back up.

Houston is the fourth largest city in the U.S., and Houston ISD is one of the area’s largest employers. It keeps electronic files on over 200,000 students and 30,000 employees. These files contain everything from personal contact information to payroll data to grades. School officials reported there was no evidence of tampering with any of these accounts, but the district and area police will continue to work with the FBI in regards to the cyber-attack.

The Internet crash occurred on Sunday, October 24, 2010 and lasted until Tuesday. The school district noticed the problem when it tried to launch a new website. At this time, authorities do not suspect the new website contributed to the problem.

As soon as the district realized there was a problem, it shut down its network to prevent hackers from accessing any information. This prevented Houston ISD employees from access email and other Internet-based applications. Once the district completed its security procedures, it restored the network, which included the new website.

While authorities may have more information into the attack, they will not release the information until they close the investigation.

Microchip implants have been in use with animals for over a decade now. The implants have a microchip that stores data and along with a radio frequency identifier (RFID). A scanner reads the chip, and information like the animal’s name, identity, owner – even health records – can be accessed.   It’s now very commonplace to ‘chip’ your animal, so that it can’t be lost or stolen. It’s been proposed that microchip implants would be a good way for humans to electronically – and permanently – store the same information that pets have on their chips. Microchip Identity Theft

Since the chip emits a radio signal, there’s the possibility that a third party could steal your chip’s identity, replicate it, and then impersonate you. Increasing the security would make a larger chip – the chips that go into pets are only the size of a grain of rice. A ten-year study on implants in mice show that some mice develop cancer around the chip. Though the radio frequency is very low and weak, it is still exposing flesh to a constant broadcast. Freezing Your Laptop Screen

As the name implies, your laptop’s display screen has liquid – it’s a liquid-crystal display, or LCD, to be exact. And yes, the LCD screen can freeze if it gets too cold. When you purchase your laptop (or LCD television) there will be a user guide that gives you the specific temperatures at which the display will work, literally freeze up, or even melt down. If the liquid crystals in the screen get to around thirty below zero, they may be permanently damaged. Nine times out of ten the clear plastic display screen will crack, and when you attempt to boot up the device, you just get a white screen and nothing else. Since LCDs are in almost everything these days – cameras (the display on the back), mobile phones, mobile game systems, and all computer monitors (pure cathode ray display screens are no longer produced), you should be familiar with how cold can kill your LCD.

Don’t Leave It In Your Car

If you freeze your laptop, usually by forgetting it in your car overnight, the best thing to do is try to let it warm up inside before you boot up. If the display is going to recover, shocking it with heat will not help. Do not, as some have done, attempt to warm up your frozen laptop in a microwave oven. Don’t put it in a regular oven. Don’t use a hairdryer on it. Let it warm up to room temperature gradually. Once it’s at room temperature, boot it up. If you only see a white light, that’s bad. LCDs don’t illuminate themselves, since the liquid crystals aren’t luminescent. There’s a white cold cathode tube behind the screen that projects light through the display. So if you see only white light coming from the display, the crystals are not energizing because they got too cold, and cracked their containment case.

A touchpad (or trackpad) is the most commonly-used pointing device on laptops. Since the touchpad is built into the device, in front of the keyboard, it doesn’t need any desk space or even a flat surface to allow the user to move the cursor around the screen. The first trackpad came out for retail use in 1994 with an Apple PowerBook. Since then, besides laptops, they’ve been incorporated into PDAs, cameras, and many mobile devices where cursors are needed by there’s no room for a mouse. Touchpads (as they’ve come to be known) use either capacitive sensing or conductive sensing to determine where a fingertip is, and then translate the two-dimensional grid information into the cursor’s movement. Modern touchpads mostly use the grounding effect of a person’s touch, which is why some laptops have problems with their touchpads when plugged into power supply units with built-in grounds.

Touchpad Wear-Out Syndrome

The touchpad, with no moving parts, is extremely durable. However, people use their laptops so much that they’ve encountered a problem that engineers haven’t foreseen: users commonly call it ‘touchpad wear-out syndrome.’ The symptoms include: flaky and inconsistent cursor movements, and a lack of response to human fingers on the touchpad. One problem can be caused by the aforementioned ground effect – a laptop that uses electrical grounding for conductive sensing on the touchpad might need to be plugged into a power strip instead of a power supply unit. Also, the touchpad can get dirty from constant use. Cleaning it up per the manufacturer’s guidelines is suggested. The last problem is the worst – the sensors beneath the touchpad lose their conductivity, and stop working. Since the touchpad is an integral part of the computer, you better hope your warrantee is up to date (or not yet expired). The only option in that case is to plug in a USB mouse.

Computer chess has been a concept since before the advent of the microprocessor; the first computer chess programs were written in the early 1950s. Papers about computer chess from that time correctly described how computers would eventually play chess. There were two key scenarios: ‘Plan A’ conceived that the computer would look at the board and then figure out the whole game based a million times over, using every single available variation. Since this is billions of possible games, programmers didn’t think early computers would be able to do them. So they came up with a ‘Plan B,’ in which computers would sort out scenarios for the best three possible moves available, and then follow them. For many years, computer chess used the Plan B programs. Before the advent of the microprocessor, computer chess programs started working. Once the microprocessor came out, they became far more powerful. Still, it was uncertain if computers would ever beat world champion-level human players, until an IBM chess program called Deep Blue beat Gary Kasparov in 1996. Today, the computers that ran the Deep Blue program are easily overpowered by the cheapest mobile phones that can support web access. Humans who play very conservative, defensive games are able to outlast computers, because the computers cannot envision enough endgames to predict where the human is headed. After Kasparov first lost to Deep Blue, he was able to change strategies and regain consistent wins. This ability is getting less common as computers are able to do more and more calculations, and literally brute force the best game out of a near infinite number of possibilities.

Since the iPhone debuted in 2007, smartphones have become a household item. Combining the functionality of a laptop, a PDA, a phone, and a web device into a pocket-sized mobile device was inevitable, if not infinitely handy. But a curious development of the adoption of this technology has some parents raising eyebrows: The use of smartphones by children as young as six months old. The smartphones are bright and colorful, with their LCD screens and buttons, and attractive to children. Where parents used to give their children a rattle or blocks, they are increasingly just handing them their smartphone. Or, they are getting smartphones just for the children. Software developers have taken note of this, and baby applications (baby apps) are a growing market. The baby apps react to the smartphone’s touchscreen technology, and are simple enough to entertain the smallest children.

The smartphones like the iPhone have motion sensors detect when the phone is shaken or tilted. This is such a simple form of input that baby apps have been written for it. The app turns the smartphone into an electronic rattler that giggles, rattles, or gives off the sounds of jingle bells when the baby shakes the phone. The wild colors that the apps give off when the smartphone is shaken seem to have a hypnotic effect on children, holding the attention of the youngest infants. Parents have been using this as a distraction, but they are starting to worry when they notice the seemingly-addictive nature of their young child’s relationship with the smartphone. But, parents who have their child’s phone on their plan can also put the phone into the baby’s crib, call the phone, and listen to the child on speakerphone, turning the phone into a mobile baby monitor. The types of printers for the home market have pretty much stabilized into three areas: Pure black-and-white using toner cartridges, which form the best way to create text papers, inkjet cartridges for color projects and art design, and inkjets using photograph paper for printing out high-quality photographic images. The three printer types are common because their components (the toner, the inkjets, and the photographic paper) all range in price, from cheap and easy to expensive. Printers themselves have come way, way down in price in the past five years, so that the cheapest inkjet printers are generally cheaper than the toner ones. However, toner last longer and is still far cheaper than inkjet replacements. (For those unfamiliar with inkjet cartridges, you need to buy blue, red, green, and black cartridges for your machine, instead of one toner cartridge.)

Only fifteen years ago it was nearly impossible for a home to have anything but a dot-matrix printer in it at best; the price was simply out of reach. However, today the question is – where do we put all our printers? Combination machines are the most popular approach, and now you can buy a printer that has a scanner, an inkjet machine, a photographic paper printer, and a fax machine – all in one. Inkjet and toner combination machines are also an attractive option. Home printers have nearly put the film processing microlabs out of business; now you just print out your pictures. But the future of print technology can barely be called print. Now, printers that turn Styrofoam and plastic blocks into three-dimensional models are being developed for home use. The 3D printers will be able to craft custom toys right at home. In the near future, ‘printers’ will be making things that really jump right off the page.

How would you react if your country was attacked, not by an invasion, an ICBM, or terrorist bombings, but a cyber attack. Cyber warfare is a new concept, and one that the average citizen isn’t familiar with. Cyber warfare is the attempt to infiltrate, disrupt, or destroy the computer networks and cyber infrastructure of its enemies. Cyber war can be conducted by individuals, non-state terrorists, countries, or all of the above. Cyberspace has been declared as the fifth dimension of warfare (the others being land, sea, air, and space.) With integrated networks so critical to the defense, commerce, and day-to-day life of a country, it’s essential that the average person knows what to expect and how to react if their country comes under a full-scale cyber attack.

Know How You’re Affected

If your nation’s computer networks are under full-scale assault by a cyber attack, as in full-blown cyber warfare, here’s what will happen: Your enemies infiltrate the computer networks of national defense, commerce, and telecommunications. They will then try to steal as much information from top-secret databases as they can, while simultaneously shutting down any attempts to counter this effort. If your country’s techs cannot defeat this attack, they may have to counter by ‘pulling the plug.’ Since in most cases, the nation’s telecommunications systems run both civilian and military networks at the same time, you might lose the ability to use the Internet, or even place a phone call, while your country is under attack, due to denial-of-service assaults. Don’t panic, and don’t try to complicate the issue by making phone calls or tying up net traffic. Instead, use a radio to get broadcasted information. Many people forget that the radio signals are not limited by the Internet, since so many people use the Internet to get stations! But the radio is still critical in the cyber warfare age.

Reminder: Hot Laptops can Burn You

It’s almost embarrassing to say it, but many people in the United States and Europe are being burned by their laptops. No, the computers aren’t exploding in their users’ face, or spontaneously combusting and catching people on fire. The laptops are burning people because they leave hot laptops on their thighs for so long that the heat can redden, dry, and irritate the skin. Doctors have had to publish their cases of ‘toasted skin syndrome’ and expose the danger that most people would think common sense could avoid. After all, if your laptop is hot – move it, right? Not so fast, say experts, who advise that warning labels be put on laptops to advise their users on how not to burn themselves with a hot computer. Laptops have a microprocessor in them that gets to over 110 degrees. If the laptop’s vents are clogged or blocked because they’re on someone’s leg, the temp can get to over 125.

How to Prevent Laptop Burns

The toasted skin syndrome was first documented in 1994, when laptops first came out, but not until the recent expansion in the use of laptops have people started burning themselves in vast numbers. Usually toasted skin syndrome turns the skin brown and gives it a mottled appearance, and it goes away after awhile, healing like a sunburn. The processor on a laptop has vents at the bottom of the computer. These vents have to be able to have good access to fresh air. There are laptop spacers you can purchase for a few bucks that you put your laptop into, and it always keeps that air gap even if you’re using the laptop on a pillow. If your laptop becomes uncomfortable, make sure you get it away from your skin, even if you’re in the middle of a serious fight on a video game.

Social Networks and Divorce

Legal experts advise their clients in cases of divorce to go on a social networking blackout. If you’re in a divorce, stay away from sites like Facebook, MySpace, and Linkedin; there has been a strong – and bad – precedent of people going on those sites during divorces, and giving up information that is then used by the spouse or partner they are divorcing. Divorcing parties have a bad habit of sharing their bad news with others, which can estrange friends and family, as well as motivate third parties to supply the opponents’ legal teams with dirt to help them in their divorce case. In one instance, a spiteful woman made a Facebook post in which she bragged about her ability to make her husband spend money by bringing up frivolous – and devastating – false accusations of child abuse. After ‘lol-ing’ about her criminal intent, the divorce court reversed custody of her children back to the father, giving her only visitation. Just desserts, as some might say.

Some people have used sites like Facebook to find evidence for ending a relationship or initiating a divorce. A woman in Florida recently saw that her new husband was a bigamist; via his Facebook friends, she discovered that he had a second wife and an entire second family in a state he regularly visited for business trips. Facebook is so efficient at tracking friends and activities that people are often unconscious about how their postings will be broadcasted to the world at large. But some people say that if the way in which social networking sites strip bare a person’s secrets, that it will force them to be more honest in their dealings with others. Another view is that a social networking profile can be maintained strictly to give a false impression of that person’s ‘candid’ life.

If you’ve been using the Internet for any amount of time, you probably know some of Google’s great features. It offers search engines, analytical tools, even books. Its popularity has even jumped the grammatical track creating a verb from a noun. Case in point, you can Google whatever you need to find the answer.

As if this weren’t enough for most people to realize the giant Google has become in the Internet world, Arbor Networks recently made an announcement that started the virtual world chattering. Google is now the second-largest carrier of traffic on the web. While some of you may be wondering why it’s only second, others will see exactly what this means.

Google is the only company on the list that isn’t an ISP. That’s right. It has managed to capture the second spot for all traffic as the only content provider on the list. When looking at the lists, analyst Craig Labovitz reported that only one wholesaler tops Google, and it carries Google’s content itself.

The data also shows that Internet use is still on the rise, making the virtual world a place where advertisers and businesses can still find new clients. And, Google’s positioning is something corporations may want to consider. Is there a shift coming in networking? Should businesses strive to offer more content rather than more connections?

Those businesses that follow Google’s lead and become more focused on content may have a better chance to become an industry giant, similar to the way Google has achieved its success, than if they do not strive to provide better products, services, and contents.

Of course, it’s important to note, too, that Google is constantly evolving. When it seems something it likes, it tries to work it into the Google family as quickly as possible. This helps Google appeal to a wider audience. Google real power is its ability to pull people from all walks of life together in one centrally located spot.

As the use of the internet has grown and become an everyday phenomenon for many individuals and businesses, the need for web browsing directly from PDAs, and now, primarily from cell phones, has become all that much more real. At one point, a PDA would’ve been nothing more than a calendar, and possibly a listing of contacts so that you could find, read and then plug the information into a cell phone or use it in some other ways.

Smart Phones and PDAs however have grown far more advanced, and though they are also much faster and capable of storing far more data than they previously could – a smart phone can hardly match up against the typical laptop or desktop computer owned by the average computer user. The limitations aren-t just limited to what-s in the case; even screen size is an obvious issue. Browser developers couldn-t simply have people downloading the same browsers onto their phones which are used on Personal Computers with all the aforementioned issues in regards to processor power and resolution.

The solution was simple though: browser developers that had already been working on desktop browsers could strip down their products of several aspects of their functionality and port them to smart phone and PDA. Likewise, other companies that wanted to get in the game began the push towards mobile browsing in the late nineties with their own start up browsers (prior to established browsers being ported to these devices). Popular mobile browsers often used on commercial handsets today include Internet Explorer Mobile, Opera Mini, the Playstation Portable Web Browser, Firefox for Mobile, Safar, Android Browser and many others as this particular market hasn-t been quashed of too much competition yet.

The changes made weren-t just on the web browser end; even web designers have created web portals designed particularly for mobile devices to access their web sites. These portals can obviously be accessed either by an actual web browser on a typical computer or a mobile device, but they are particularly stripped for use with mobile devices and appear rather awkward when used through the typical internet browser. With this two pronged solution towards dealing with browsing the internet on a mobile device, the issue is all but solved, with the exception of some functionality qualms which we will see improve over the course of time.

Text-based browsing was not the most fashionable thing to do, as even early on, browsers were often able to display images. Browsers like Lynx had their edge over more high tech browsers however. For one thing, loading an image isn’t exactly fast. In fact, on an older dial up network, some of the images available today wouldn’t even load at all considering their size, before the connection timed out and you get stuck with a quarter of somebody’s head on the screen. Further, no Lynx was unable to open the images in the browser itself; it did allow the end user the functionality of taking care of such operations externally through the applicable software applications on the local machine. This meant a fast web browsing experience that could be customized to deal with images on an as-needed basis, which explains why unlike many other more advanced browsers of that time; Lynx is still known by name to many a geek.

After the entire fiasco with Microsoft’s bundling Internet Explorer with the Windows operating system, to the exclusion of other browsing candidates, and lawsuits that followed – many people have gained a better idea of the numerous different options that they technically have available to them even if they choose the convenience of simply using the Operating System bundled browser. And this competition in the market has led to several innovations in how we view the internet today.
Though to many people, the internet is synonymous with Google (no, really) and their only contact with a computer is for very limited work related purposes, most other American consumers in urban communities have long since grasped the internet and ran with it. And in doing so, they’ve made personal choices about how they intended to utilize the internet based on individual judgment on reliability, security, convenience and features.

Though, at one point, Internet Explorer held a large sway over the market, as did AOL (when they used to send everybody their discs right at home for free month-long trials), that has long since changed with the advent of open source software alternatives. Instead of the typical choices, many users had switched to Mozilla Firefox for the initial superiorities it seemed to have over Internet Explorer in terms not only of speed and security, but the ability to distribute add-ons that improved niche functionality of the browsing experience. At that same time, the predecessor to Mozilla Firefox, Netscape Navigator, was running out of business and many of the later’s clients were redirected to the former.

Gaining global renown, Firefox did more for the variety of options now available than the individual companies that sprang with a plan themselves, in a way, as it showed users that there was another possibility. And today, because of this, we have browsers competing from several different companies, and with improvements by old giants, all of them are equally competitive for their particular clientele. The biggest names in internet browsing today are Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, Google Chrome and Safari.

Where one day a person could be adequately assured that nobody would know anything about him, as a unique individual, beyond what limited information transferred in the form of rumors or self advertisement – we now have entire business founded on the concept of target advertising. Businesses collect information about individuals, through offers of “free” goods or through services such as social networking sites.
Some would call it an encroachment on privacy – after all, how many people actually read the numerous terms of service agreements to which they have “click to agree.” The typical user simply wants to get to his or her service or good, and often doesn’t even realize that doing so means that somebody else will be harvesting his/her personal information for private financial enterprise. Of course, the case of negligence simply doesn’t hold in a court of law and these various service providers are well within their right to collect, and often even to sell, the personal information of the members of their service.

The deteriorating nature of individual consumer privacy, due to the internet, has only been exacerbated. But it isn’t all bad for the end users. Sure, as a matter of principal, you may not want information sold pertaining to yourself – especially when you can’t have direct access to the financial motivation to giving it away. But in turn, users are often able to receive ads that they actually will consider, deals that they would’ve otherwise missed out on products that they’ve long wanted to purchase and services that they had considered signing up for but simply had forgotten. The nature of targeted advertising means also that it isn’t so obvious that the advertising is in fact what it is, advertising. And though in a way that may seem sinister, for the end user, the internet revolution of private information may well be beneficial in several respects.

Staying secure and protected on the Internet is an important part of taking advantage of all the benefits that it has to offer without being taken advantage of by it. Chatting on the internet is not only entertaining, it’s an act which has long history behind it and the development of which is in and of itself quite interesting. The beginning of “chatting,” per says, can be traced to the innovation that was the Telnet protocol. Envisioned well before the internet went public, this protocol laid the groundwork for chatting as it was the propellant behind the concept of email and the idea that people at multiple machines, geographically separated by a significant distance, could communicate in simple text (as opposed to archaic machine languages that operators alone would be trained and proficient in).

Today, chatting is something that has become altogether common. From the chat rooms on MSN and Yahoo with which people are able to connect with many different people who share one or two common interests – to the means of chatting developed in many modern social networking sites such as Facebook, it is simply everywhere. As a means of communication, it’s not too different from “hanging out” with a group of friends. People share ideas, jokes, laugh, and express themselves in other ways and the only regularly established means of retaining anything that took place is through one’s memory. That really makes for an entertaining environment even if it is indeed the furthest thing from what the founders of the internet would’ve envision for it.

But chatting has become more than just words, and trivial messages exchanged in the form of text between a handful of individuals from different computers. With fully developed graphical emoticons, voice communications tools and even the ability to display your own image on camera while chatting – it’s really become something much more. With the development of the internet, this very niche itself has developed (and continues to do so) beyond anything anyone could’ve expected or predicted.

The Internet was a great idea. Suddenly, you could connect multiple computers in separate geographical locations, allowing you to sync up and create data that would be shared by several parties without the time spent in waiting for a shipment. This idea though was still at a young stage, as though computers had become able to communicate with one another, there was still a significant learning curve to understanding the cryptic protocols of the system. Further, there was no even semi-user friendly means of simply sending a message to a companion miles away even though the computers were connected – though this was essentially the end goal.

The realization that there was still a great an unmet need gave an idea to Ray Tomlinson. He pictured a protocol for ARPANet (the internet as it was then known): what is even today known as telnet protocol. This had simplified email to some extent. The protocol allowed users to log into other machines remotely, to which they had absolutely no physical connection and which could in fact reside many miles away from the client machine. From there, the protocol would allow the access of host specified files and the client would be able to use several different sets of possible data and even programs that the host maintains. But because the host can also become client, and the client can also act as a host, the protocol is essentially bidirectional.

This would develop over the course of time as Telnet does not encrypt data by default (for example) and has a number of other vulnerabilities which would belie its usefulness, particularly for the military. Many other issues would be improved till the present time where we would be able to use Graphics User Interface (GUI) enriched mailing clients that we have become so accustomed to such as Gmail, Hotmail and Yahoo as well as the computer based programs like Outlook and Thunderbird.

These people worked fast. Less than a few years after the initial suggestion, a computer at MIT was connected over the regularly used telephone lines to another computer on the other side of the country in sunny California. Though the achievement was a great hallmark for these visionaries, they realized that line’s just weren’t quite good enough as they were typically used. This realization led to the development of what would soon be called the internet, ARPANet.

This development in 1969 led to the successful connection of multiple machines in the United States. This was a breakthrough for the defense department as it meant that several machines would remain operational even in the case of a nuclear strike, a great fear during the Cold War era. The system was not particularly user friendly. Today’s gamers and typical business computer users wouldn’t have been able to grasp the extensively complex system that had originally been generated – nor would it have been profitable for them to do so at the time as the cost of the learning curve simply couldn’t outweigh the actual benefits to these fields. In spite of that, these humble origins would be the basis for all that would follow – including that which we’ve taken for granted today.

The internet age has simply revolutionized business. Where one day, parties would meet with one another for trade, which soon developed into the malls and complexes we now know, they can now conduct business miles away with the touch of a button. This modern convenience has meant change for merchants the world-over, but the changes aren’t all good.

For one thing, the stock isn’t as easily accessible. While customers could inspect any merchandise prior to purchasing it at a store or a stall, to some extent, this is virtually impossible when buying online. Though even in a store setting, the customer can’t actually check inside a box or plastic packaging, the customer does at least have the ability to check and assure him that the box is intact and nothing’s outwardly amiss.

A second problem arising from the rise of virtual markets is fraud. While many merchants are indeed reliable, many also are not. There people that will take credit card, and other financial information, and give the individual nothing in return while the person can of themselves do nothing as these fraudsters are often doing this from miles away. This poses a lack of the security consumers have come to expect at a typical store that they normally shop at. However, this has given rise to a variety of means of instilling security in consumers, such as consumer advocacy groups (the like of which also exist for real-life stores).

These inadequacies aside, the online store craze is actually understandable. Being able to make purchases as conveniently as moving around your pointer and typing on a computer is more than just convenient. Even the inadequacies can be dealt with. To deter consumers from being conned, not for profit consumer advocacy groups exist. Likewise, though the consumer is often unable to inspect the goods prior to receiving them, these online merchants often have return policies not unlike their real-life counterparts. All in all, in spite of any issues that may be raised, the system only has room for improvement and we ought to expect more such business models in the near to distant future.

As our lives become gradually relegated more and more to simply those people with whom we have to directly relate, such as at work, school and our families, people are finding that the internet is one of the best means of communicating for the sole purpose of socializing, or to have fun. Whereas at one time, people may have congregated far more regularly at a town hall or something of that nature, times have changed quite a bit with the advancements in communications. From the Pony Express, to the modern internet age, humanity is moving towards and more and more reclusive future where actual contact with one another becomes far less mandatory for our required regular tasks.

This makes the Internet a very important and meaningful medium for making friends and getting to know other people. A philosopher once highlighted that man is a social creature. In everything man does, he requires a teacher or somewhere from which he can draw some sort of initial inspiration before embarking on his creative talents. This natural inclination to socialize, though hampered (ironically) in the age of globalization has given him reason to seek other conduits whereby he may fulfill his social cravings.

The internet is full of online communities where people who share ideas in common can congregate and spread their own variants of these ideas even further. With online forums, one person has the capacity to reach an audience of possibly hundreds of other individuals that agree with what he/she has to say about a particular topic – general in his/her niche hobby or work-related field.

Beyond just online forums, entire communities have developed that regularly attend particular chat rooms. Here, they find themselves in an even more social and less rule-driven gathering not unlike a real life party. Each thing you say will be laughed at and enjoyed for the moment, in all possibility, lost as there is no “save” or “post” features in most chat rooms.

These two are but simple examples of how society is adapting to the changes provoked by the internet as man will always be a social creature.

But this hope by these institutions, to save a bit of money, is making the world’s finances even more dependent on the internet infrastructure than ever before. Now, email isn’t just for sending jokes to a coworker or signing up for spam, it’s how you receive vital information regarding the status of your account. Whether that’s good or bad can be judged in individual cases, however, the end result is clear. Internet finance is growing – and it is here to stay.

The internet has opened a means to research in an esoteric array of subjects for people everywhere. Libraries, though still beneficial, are essentially on their way out as more and more books are scanned and put online and others have online ebooks often sold secondarily to their primary titles. Further, in the past, researchers would often collect cards for a particular newspaper clipping or journal article for which they were searching. All of these things are available to the modern scholar at a mere click of a button or a few keyboard strokes.

This has been primarily the result of the growing role of search engines. Popular search engines today, such as Google, Bing, and Yahoo, have collected data, and even caches, on websites everywhere. This data is than indexed with pointers allowing users to visit the respective sites and find exactly the information that they were looking for. And the process is so much shorter than that of looking around for the correct number at a library.

Libraries of course are not yet outdated. Much of the material available at a good library can’t be found online, and other works can’t be published online (legally) as the publisher retains their products’ rights. However, for the academic, the internet has opened up a wealth of previously unavailable material. Whereas once, the researcher may not even have known of a relevant text in his or her field, he can now find it online. And if he can’t find it online, he can find the link to a reseller online and than find a way to contact them and purchase a hard copy. All of this has paved the way for advancements in science, in a better understanding of history, and many other subjects, unlike ever before. It comes as no surprise, therefore, that schools and individuals are taking great care to avail of these benefits.

The internet was envisioned as a great network whereby the infrastructure of our nation, and its defense strategy, could be preserved. It was likewise seen as a means for professionals and academics to share highlights in their respective fields with one another. An aspect of the internet which it’s visionaries probably wouldn’t have foreseen was extensive online gaming.

Online gaming began in the form of text based games. Users would transmit moves that they would make on an actual chess board via email, or they would play games involving role-playing and fantasy through reading and sharing aspects of stories with another. That was the past.

Today’s gaming industry is far more advanced, so to speak. With cutting edge 3D graphics, wireless controllers, motion sensing, etc. Today’s video games will transmit far greater amounts of data over far shorter periods of time. For example, in some games, the amount of ammo you have at a given time, your health bar, the weapons you own – all of these are transmitted almost instantaneously. Likewise, impact and collision with environment and other plays is also transmitted almost instantaneously. This has been extremely useful in Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games (MMORPGs) such as the wildly popular, World of Warcraft, by Activision. Likewise, an equal number of people subscribe to different types of games (shooters, strategy, puzzle, etc.) around the world and avail of the benefits in internet, processor speed, and driver updates.

Internet gaming isn’t just limited to such professionally designed games however. Every office work knows about Solitaire, that was a great way to burn time in the past. Nowadays though, games of that nature, and other card games exist in multiplayer environments over the internet often through free gaming sites. Other sites, whereby individuals aren’t able to compete with one another directly, do offer users the possibility of playing against each other in a more abstract way by trying to reach greater heights in leader boards.

The internet, once only used for defense and scientific purposes, is now widely used by people around the world for an ever-increasing set of tasks. For example, the internet has become a great way to conduct ecommerce. Business models such as those of Amazon and Ebay have profited enormously from this possibility by allowing users around the world to bid on, or purchase, particular products from the comfort of their own home. This also often allows customers to cut out the middle men in purchasing certain custom made or rare niche goods.

The way in which clients use internet applications has taken on two very distinct, yet equally necessary forms. In the past, the same tasks would’ve been significantly more complex as the web developer would’ve had to use a combination of various other programming languages to achieve their desired results – and even then, options were lacking.

With the advent of modern scripting languages, the game has changed. The European Grid project came to a close in 2008. The project’s ultimate goal of developing high performance computing centers in all the European countries was achieved, linking all of Europe together in a computer grid.
