Lately every domain reseller is offering .co domain extension where you get the domain name you want; although at a slightly higher cost than the other .net and .com domain names. With almost every person wanting a personal domain name, it has become evident that .com, .net and .info and even .me will not suffice. Everyone is rushing to book domain names of their choice; especially those who had missed out on the opportunity to book a .com domain name. After almost all of the names in .com are registered, it is about time that another worldwide domain name takes its place. But is this extension going to be recognized by Google and other search engines? Initially the response was quite slow but the race to book as many names as possible in the .co extension has picked up speed and people do not care if Google notices or not, they just need their favorite domain names.
Initially .co was the country specific code of the Colombian government but recently the Internet S.A.S agency has allowed international sale of these domains worldwide to avoid running out of domain names and to avoid extra-long .com domain names. These domain names are as good as .com domain names with more than 20 countries already using these extensions along with their country extensions such as the United Kingdom with .co.uk, Japan with .co.jp and china with .co.cn.
This shows that these domain extensions are here to stay; but will they be as popular as the .com? But looks like it is about to get ugly with domains being booked unnecessarily by people who have nothing associated to these domain names and demanding huge sums from the .com domain name holders of the similar names. Many internet giants are rushing to book their .co domain names, the first in line being Twitter which bagged twitter.co. But still many more internet biggies like google.co are up for grabs and may result in some messy lawsuits. So there has to be a firm mechanism in place to curb the unnecessary registering of domain names.
