Is .co the new .com?

Lately every domain reseller is offering .co domain extension where you get the domain name you want; although at a slightly higher cost than the other .net and .com domain names. With almost every person wanting a personal domain name, it has become evident that .com, .net and .info and even .me will not suffice. Everyone is rushing to book domain names of their choice; especially those who had missed out on the opportunity to book a .com domain name. After almost all of the names in .com are registered, it is about time that another worldwide domain name takes its place. But is this extension going to be recognized by Google and other search engines? Initially the response was quite slow but the race to book as many names as possible in the .co extension has picked up speed and people do not care if Google notices or not, they just need their favorite domain names.

Initially .co was the country specific code of the Colombian government but recently the Internet S.A.S agency has allowed international sale of these domains worldwide to avoid running out of domain names and to avoid extra-long .com domain names. These domain names are as good as .com domain names with more than 20 countries already using these extensions along with their country extensions such as the United Kingdom with .co.uk, Japan with .co.jp and china with .co.cn.

This shows that these domain extensions are here to stay; but will they be as popular as the .com? But looks like it is about to get ugly with domains being booked unnecessarily by people who have nothing associated to these domain names and demanding huge sums from the .com domain name holders of the similar names. Many internet giants are rushing to book their .co domain names, the first in line being Twitter which bagged twitter.co. But still many more internet biggies like google.co are up for grabs and may result in some messy lawsuits. So there has to be a firm mechanism in place to curb the unnecessary registering of domain names.

In this Information Age the role of the Internet is ever expanding, and having a presence on the Internet in vital. Domain name registrars and web hosting services provide businesses, groups, and individuals with the opportunity to operate a website in order to have digital visibility. These companies enable people to own websites of their own naming, such as “mynamehere.com”.

Some of the most successful domain name registrars include Network Solutions, Go Daddy, Tucows, and eNom. It is a very lucrative field, with Go Daddy managing more than 40 million domains names as of 2010. Go Daddy is the most famous and currently most prosperous registrar, with high-profile advertising campaigns including several Super Bowl commercials. The Go Daddy Girl was introduced in 2005 as WWE Diva Candice Michelle, who has since been joined by IndyCar racer Danica Patrick and a number of other female athletes as spokeswomen for the company.

The name registrars have a limited number of top-level domains (TLD), which is the extension for a domain name, such as “.com” and “.net”. Certain TLD extensions are reserved for specific organizations, such as “.gov” for American governmental entities and “.edu” for universities. There are also country-specific TLD extensions, such as “.us” for the United States and “.deĆ¢” for Germany. Each TLD indicates the type of website that it is attached to, such as “.biz” for businesses and “.tel” for communication services.

Paid web hosting services offer enough space on a server and bandwidth for a complex site, email accounts, and database management. Complex sites, which can include anything from several pages of information to forums and e-commerce, need web application frameworks such as PHP or Java in order to function. Free web hosting services such as GeoCities and Angelfire are only typically adequate for creating personal webpages. Users are given a subdomain within the larger site, which is supported through advertising, and the amount of data they can upload to the site is severely limited. There is much more freedom and support in developing a site from a paid web host, rather than a free web host.
