Thanks to ESPN and other sports networks, poker has enjoyed a boom in popularity in the past 10 to 15 years. There are now games of Texas Hold-Em going on at all hours at casinos across the country and you can always find a game online to play just for fun or to make big bucks. The secret to being a good poker player is patience and a little luck never hurts.
There are a number of different types of poker games to play. No Limit Texas Hold-Em is the most popular right now because this is the variation you see played most on television. It can be played by a large number of people using a standard 52-card deck because each player gets two cards that only they see and then everyone shares five cards, which are placed in the middle. This is the game where patience is a must because you have to be willing to throw in your cards when you do not have a very good hand. Even when you have a very good hand (like a pair of Aces in the hole) it is wise to be patient. You can small to fool the other players into thinking you do not have a very good hand. This is known as slow playing the hand.
Other types of poker games include five card draw and seven-card stud. In draw poker you can throw away up to three cards and draw new ones to try and improve your hand. Stud is similar to Hold-Em except that you are dealt a unique set of seven cards to make your best hand instead of sharing cards with the entire table. In seven card stud, you are dealt two cards face down followed by four up that everyone can see and then the final card is again dealt face down.
